I am normally the most enthusiastic Holiday cheerleader. I love the holidays! So many family traditions that I am loving incorporating with the family traditions of Dr. Geek.
One of my favorite activities is the Secret Santa git exchange that my family takes part in (my dad and step-mom's side) We have a blast with it. Everyone sends their letters to Santa (an email to the entire group) and many are quite humorous. We always get together on Christmas Eve or as close to as possible with the various sets of in-laws. So this year, once we closed on the house, Dr. Geek and I repeatedly stated, "Christmas Eve is at our house!" There had been a brief conversation that we were planning a visit to the land-o-Dr. Geek's-birth, but we were pretty clear we were hosting the shin dig!
Somewhere folks got it into their head that we were laving town for the holidays and even our repeated mantra of "Christmas Eve is at our house" couldn't shake the brief mention that we were going to be out of state come December 24! We wanted to have the first Christmas in our house, in our house!
We attempted to coordinate a date other than Christmas Eve to get everyone together, that was a complete wash! So now it is pretty much every man for himself. The names have been assigned and the emails are starting to go out, but it just feels-- empty.
The gifts were never the important thing it was the fun of the get-together. This became rather clear to me when I got home from school and got the mail. There was a large mailing envelope addressed to me and I opened it to find the packing slip stating the contents of the enclosed box. Great gift, wrong sentiment.
Oh well, that is my bit of Holiday blues. I gotta' snap out of it!
